Situation

Surveillance capitalism is the systematic collection of personal information by organizations that seek to influence, manage, or control certain individuals or groups. Though this issue is a threat to individual freedom, a lot of young adults are found to overlook the seriousness of the situation and accept it as is.

Project Statement

As an interactive design project, us—er/ed took young people on an unintentional journey and help them learn about surveillance capitalism concept by the confrontation of personal information being used against them.

Approach - Engage

The experiment subjects will be targeted and approach with an app that claims to connect them with real people for chatting and deeper connections. Messages are made between the subject and the friend, creating a safe and friendly chat space. During the time, the subjects will eventually give away some points, keywords, information, secrets; then their location, photos access, and voice recognition.

Motivate - Control

As they have known each other even more, the subject is suggested places to go, or activities to do, according to their personality. The subject follows the friend's guidance, and became eager to chat with them. After a while, that friend proposed to meet the subject, promising a surprise. But little did the subject know, that the "friend" was actually not a human. It was a system that exploited the subject’s data and behavior for a darker benefit.

I know you dearly

Book of you: everything about you, how to manipulate you, cause of death, childhood life, past trauma, ideal partners, etc. The data library that has been extracted and analyzed from chat activity.

I think of you fondly

The rings are made out of yarns & swirl around the room, having dipped in a type of substance to attracts flies. Installations of flies & analyzation & suggestion (targeted ads, manipulated information shown). Biding on users’ information happens in mili-second among thousands of companies for their targeted content.

Yet a farewell, sadly

It’s one last call with the ‘friend’. Subject can talk as long as they want, can ask anything. However, if they ask about their data, the call will end. The re-action of multiple tech companies when confronted about their doings of surveillance capitalism - deny or stay silent.

But, do you know me?

Underground: the setting are the yarns produced from machines that generated by personal data. A live performance of people wearing thief hat and knitting a giant piece going through the whole building. Data is bit by bit, though seems to be tiny but collected to build something huge can have a great impact, just like the art of knitting. The knitted giant piece and the machines represent the whole industry of surveillance capitalism, being nurtured in the dark, in disguise.

TO CONCLUDE

This is my graduation project as a design student; and it has been a challenging yet rewarding journey. I have been able to stick with my topic of surveillance capitalism from the beginning, despite its difficulty and complexity. A lot of skill in 3D animation is learnt, as well as exploring new interest in interactive projects. I am also proud of myself for balancing work and study, and better my time management comparing to Capstone 1. What I wish is that I have more time to adjust more feedbacks from my Lecturers and Supervisor. They are incredibly creative and constructive, giving helpful comments, that I truly appreciate. My next steps are to complete the video to the best of my ability, create an identity and showcase it fully. I may also apply to some animation or design competitions as my supervisor advised. I hope that one day, I will be able to create a real interactive project and make us-er/ed a reality. Special thanks to my supervisors: Abbas Mteirek & Rebecca Lu
