59.2050 Case Studies in Writes
59.2050 means Sai Gon in 2050. In this city, people comes from different corners of Viet Nam for multiple purposes. What a lot of people often do while on the road, is spotting the vehicle number plates. They recognize hometown fellows by the initial numbers; and for Saigon is 59.
This project is researched for Ho Chi Minh City Museum, Viet Nam, with a goal to reflect the role of the museum in Vietnamese culture and the demands of 21st-century museums.
To bring a transformation to the museum, 59.2050 proposes a new vision, potentially enhance the engagement of people with Ho Chi Minh city cultures and its developments.
In the initial research process, giga-mapping technique helps us to define the museum, the city and the community in a broader perspective. We examine the current image of these three elements and redefine the vision for the museum that reflects its city and community. This also reveals the complex connections among the different nodes.
As we face the great challenges of the 21st century, such as climate change, we need to explore and rediscover the land we live in.
This is a valuable opportunity for the museum to go beyond its physical boundaries and reach out to every corner of its city. The museum has always been a witness of the city’s history, but now it can also be a catalyst for its future.
By 2050, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam's biggest metropolis, will be gone and 20 million people will have been displaced, according to The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports.
The prediction is not new, but it has been proven to not reach almost 66,7% of this project's survey participants, who are young Vietnamese, mostly between 18 and 30 years old.
In other words, this topic is still young, and it needs to be re-introduced in a different manner to the audience.
Introduce the fact of losing a large part of Sai Gon in 2050 to people
Transform data to an approachable form of art, that constructed by the interactions and contributions of mainly local people in Sai Gon.
Encourage a re-discover and re-connect to elements of the city before losing it in 2050
The event will run from October to December when the water tide is highest. The water will cover and uncover the installations of ACT I and II to show the impact of rising water level on the city. The event will not have a fixed date or time, but will email audiences when to come based on the water level estimation from the device in ACT I installation.
ACT I — Water is The New Ground (October to November) An installation in the middle of Sai Gon River.
ACT II — Afloat Dwellers (October to November) 18 glass rooms, placed floating on the river branches or canal that go across 18 districts of Sai Gon, becoming the place's sculpture created by the local's contribution.
ACT III — Aqua Memoirs (December) online via social media
This installation shows how Saigon city will look like in 2050 when partly flooded by the river. It uses water level changes and photos taken by people from the city to create a realistic and interactive experience. Photos above are the city's fragments, taken and donated to this project by people living in Saigon. The installation is made of cubes that represent the districts of the city and their flood risk. The cubes are arranged according to the city’s map and color-coded by the flood risk level: low, medium, high. The lower the cube, the higher the risk. The installation is located near Sai Gon WaterBus Station, Khanh Hoi Bridge and Nguyen Hue Walking Street.

These sub-installations let the audience express their connection to each district of Sai Gon by placing an object that represents it. There are 18 glass rooms, floating on the water lines that cross 18 districts of Sai Gon. Each district has one glass room, filled with different objects from the people. The map below shows the locations of ACT II glass rooms along with ACT I installation. While ACT I shows a macro view, ACT II reveals a micro view of each district’s identity and story. ACT II allows people to create art from their bond to the area, a living space with human touch.

An augmented reality experience that lets people see how their own homes will be affected by high tide in 2050. It is a way to remember the previous two activities and to raise awareness of the flood impact on the city. It is also a chance for those who missed the previous activities to learn about the project. This phase focuses on the digital interaction with the reality of personal space. The audience can choose their district and see how it will be submerged by water in 2050 or compare other districts. The water is rising, inching closer, from the distant city, to your street, now into your home.
