The motion graphic is inspired by my favorite TV show- Breaking Bad. The story is about 2 man started to get into cooking and selling crystallized methamphetamine in Albuquerque, New Mexico, how they are gradually controlled by the dirty money, putting themselves and families in danger, and most of all, becoming darker and more dangerous versions season by season.
I also take the inspiration from real life. Recently a full recording of George Floyd from the police car's camera has been released, which reveals the truth about the reason why George is arrested and suppressed. The so-called "innocent" man and all the misleading videos from by-standers have made a dramatic effect on America's communities, facilities, justice. I personally never stand by racism, but people nowadays are likely led by social media so easily.
There are 2 layers of meanings I wanted to include in this work. First layer: the journey of drug abuse. The more modern our life is, the more people will look for ways to drugs. Life is stressful and people need a "getaway" solution. At first they think they are the one who can control everything, but actually in the end, the stimulant controls them. Soon, everyone, from a normal worker to a mother of a new born child, will depend on drug to live by.
Second layer is how we today are led by social media and fake news. In the future, people will be overwhelmed by information and it's hard to tell which one can be trusted. People's belief and actions will be managed by the government, the media. In the end, they don't recognize themselves and don't even know why they do what they do.
I want to combine two visual styles: Vapor-wave and Cartoon. Even though the story is serious and even violent related, the images are colorful and somehow childish, which not only make it less heavy and also create a new experience among works about similar topics. Most of my work previously were modern, clean, with very safe choice of design and color. This time I want to see my work in a more colorful way, play with fresh elements and composition, create a total different vibe.
Vapor-wave visual style match with the mood I want to create, from the color of late night, neon light and the illustration of modern people, being locked inside with video games. I also use flat images, thick organic strokes and texture to demonstrate cartoon style. To show the mood of late night, modern life, and also include some visual effects in compositions about hallucination, these colors are perfect for these images.
The fan’s blades morph into deadly axes as the character reaches a new high. He snatches an axe and swings it at the horse’s neck, severing it in one blow. Drug users often experience imagined attacks from their surroundings, even from those they love. The character, hallucinating the threat, defends himself by killing a harmless animal. The horse is a homage to the Breaking Bad series, and also symbolizes the innocent victims of drug addiction.
Getting out of the character's perspective, Mr. Big Nose is now lying lifelessly on the couch with no soul. His body is here but his mind is being control by something else. Nobody knows what actually happens inside him. It's actually the whole apartment now, everyone is the same. They are all controlled by a mysterious fume or smoke. Does it attack the innocent people or do they let it to?
